Ordoo’s Weekly Mobile Ordering Update – 2nd Octover 2017

America. The home of the world’s biggest companies is beginning to show its hand on mobile ordering. Last week, it was announced that Ritual, a mobile ordering app for coffee and lunch, closed a $53m Series B round led by Insight Venture Partners. With this development, I thought it relevant to analyse the mobile ordering situation across the Atlantic.

Mobile Ordering Landscape In the USA

Arguably, mobile ordering was originated in New York back in 2005. In an interesting interview with Olo founder Noah Glass, he reveals his initial idea originated when grabbing a coffee on the go. Over the last 12 years, Noah has grown Olo to capture 60 million customers across 200 of the leading restaurant chains in the US. He has recently announced news of a partnership with Amazon Restaurants, enabling Amazon to connect with various restaurant point of sale systems.

Whilst Olo is leading the race for white labelled mobile ordering solutions, the aggregator environment is hotting up. In addition to Ritual’s recent raise, LevelUp has had just shy of $100m investment to build and grow their platform. LevelUp has a strong mobile ordering technology stack, that integrates with numerous 3rd parties. Unlike Olo, they’re building the LevelUp brand and aggregating restaurants onto one platform. This is the approach we agree with at Ordoo.

It is clear that the mobile ordering market is moving rapidly in the US as these providers are building significant momentum. Whilst the UK maybe a year or two behind, it is clear that the timing is right for mobile ordering companies.
